Apple pie with Kruszonka: Traditional Polish Dessert

This timeless dessert, full of juicy apples and covered with a shortcrust pastry with the addition of crunchy crumble, is a favorite of many generations. Apple pie with crumble is a warm memory of Sunday dinners at grandma's, holidays, family meetings or just moments when we wanted to serve ourselves and our loved ones something really special. The recipe for apple pie with crumble is simple and reliable. It does not require specialized equipment or skills. All you need is a few basic ingredients that we always have in the kitchen, and above all, good quality apples. It is best when they are fresh, juicy, but not too sweet to perfectly balance the sweetness of the cake and crumble.
Ingredients:
- On the cake:
- 350g (12.3oz) wheat flour
- 200g (7oz) butter
- 100g (3.5oz) sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- For the filling:
- 1kg (35.3oz) of apples
- 100g (3.5oz) sugar
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- For the crumble:
- 125g (4.4oz) wheat flour
- 80g (2.8oz) butter
- 80g (2.8oz) sugar
Instructions:
- Prepare the dough: In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar and baking powder. Add cubed cold butter and egg, knead the dough. Divide into two equal parts, wrapping each in cling film, chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
- Prepare the filling: Peel the apples, remove the cores and cut into thin slices. In a bowl, mix apples with sugar and cinnamon.
- Prepare the crumble: In a bowl, mix the flour and sugar. Add cubed cold butter and quickly knead the dough into crumbs.
- Preheat oven to 180°C (356°F). Brush the bottom and sides of the baking pan with butter, then line one portion of the dough.
- Spread the apples on the dough, cover with the other part of the dough and sprinkle with crumble.
- Bake the apple pie for about 50-60 minutes until the crumble is golden brown.
