  • 250g (8.8oz) Jaś dry beans
  • 3 cups (1014 fl oz) of water to soak the beans

  • 600g (21.2oz) tomato puree
  • 2 medium onions (about 300g/10.6oz)
  • 6 cloves garlic (30g/1.1oz)
  • 4 tbsp (2.1 fl oz) vegetable oil for frying
  • Spices and herbs: 2 bay leaves; 2 grains of allspice; a teaspoon each of salt, sweet paprika and marjoram, half a level teaspoon each of ground pepper, ground cumin and ground coriander or whole
