Why Does the Amount of Water We Drink Matter?
Water is essential for the proper functioning of our bodies. Every cell, tissue, and organ in our body needs water to function properly. Water helps eliminate waste through urine, sweat, and bowel movements, maintains a normal body temperature, lubricates and cushions joints, and protects delicate tissues. Dehydration, even in mild form, can lead to a decrease in energy and cause fatigue.
How Much Water Should We Drink?
The amount of water we should drink each day depends on various factors such as our health condition, level of physical activity, and where we live. There is no one-size-fits-all formula that works for everyone. Some studies suggest that healthy adults living in moderate climates should consume about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids per day for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids per day for women. These recommendations include fluids from water, other beverages, and food. Approximately 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food, and the rest from beverages.
Should We Drink Eight Glasses of Water a Day?
You may have heard the advice to drink eight glasses of water a day. It is easy to remember and is a reasonable goal. Most healthy individuals can maintain adequate hydration by drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel thirsty. For some people, less than eight glasses a day may be sufficient, while others may need more. Your fluid intake is likely adequate if you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colorless or light yellow.
Can You Drink Too Much Water?
Keep in mind that drinking excessive amounts of water is rarely a problem for healthy, well-nourished adults. Athletes may sometimes drink too much water to prevent dehydration during long or intense exercises. When you drink too much water, your kidneys cannot eliminate the excess water. The sodium content in your blood becomes diluted. This condition is called hyponatremia and can be life-threatening.
